Hungary Entry Requirements

Since Hungary is a member country of the Schengen Zone, all citizens of the rest of the EU/EEA member states can enter carrying only an identification document.

On the other hand, if you are a non-EU/EEA national wishing to visit Hungary, you should carry the following documents, when you show up at the Hungarian port of entry:

  • A valid passport or travel document. Valid for at least three more months beyond your planned date of exit from Schengen, and issued within the last 10 years.
  • A visa – if you are subject to the Hungarian visa regime.
  • Documents proving your purpose of entry. E.g. hotel reservation, invitation letter, invitation to attend a conference or other events, etc.
  • Proof you have sufficient financial means for your stay in Hungary. The Hungarian authorities have not specified the amount of money one has to declare per each day of stay in Hungary.

*British passport holders are exempt from the criteria of passport validity and issuance date.

In addition, the border officer at the Hungarian port of entry may ask you a few questions regarding your trip to Hungary like:

  • What is your purpose for visiting Hungary?
  • How long do you intend to stay in Hungary?
  • Where are you going to stay in Hungary? Etc.

This border officer is the person who holds the final decision on whether you shall be permitted to enter Hungary or not. You will be permitted to enter Hungary, if the border guard concludes that you are at no risk to Hungary or the EU, upon checking your documents.

Ensure that the border officer stamps your passport when you enter Hungary. Without a stamp, you could be fined or detained in Hungary.
